If you’ve strolled through the Highway 98 pedestrian underpass in Inlet Beach recently, you might have noticed something extraordinary—10 massive, jaw-dropping murals that have completely transformed this once-plain tunnel into a vibrant, walkable masterpiece.
In late 2024, the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County (CAA) turned this 136-foot-long passageway into a dynamic art gallery, showcasing the talent of 10 local artists. The result? A tunnel that doesn’t just get you from point A to point B—it invites you to slow down, take it all in, and maybe even snap a few pics for the ‘gram.
A Walk Through Creativity
Located at the bustling intersection of Highway 98 and County Highway 30A—two scenic corridors known for their beauty—the underpass is now more than just a practical crossing. It’s an explosion of creativity, with each 20-foot-wide mural reflecting the distinct style and vision of its creator.
The artists bringing this tunnel to life include Francisco Adaro, Katherine Boggs, Heather Clements, Bradley Copeland, Olga Guy, Wes Hinds, Sarah Page, Andy Saczynski, Andrea Scurto, and Lindsay Tobias. Whether it’s bold, abstract patterns, coastal-inspired scenes, or surreal dreamscapes, each mural tells a unique story, adding to the ever-growing artistic spirit of Walton County.
Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
This transformation didn’t happen overnight. It’s all part of the Florida Department of Transportation’s $5.6 million underpass project, made possible through the collaboration of Scenic Walton, the Walton County Board of County Commissioners, and the Walton County Tourism Department. Plus, a little extra love and support came from the National Endowment for the Arts, St. Joe Community Foundation, Rosemary Beach Realty, Market 30A, 30A.com, Morning Star Foundation, 30Avenue, Howard Group, and John and Nina Freer.
More Than Just a Tunnel
The CAA’s Art in Public Spaces Program is all about bringing art into the everyday lives of locals and visitors alike, and this project is a perfect example of that mission in action. These murals don’t just brighten up the underpass—they spark conversation, celebrate local talent, and make the community even more visually inspiring.
So, next time you find yourself near Inlet Beach, take a little detour and experience this incredible open-air gallery for yourself. Trust us—it’s worth the walk!
